Almost 14 years ago I created senior portraits for my first senior. Her name was Kayla and her mom remembered the vision I had for Kayla that was experimental at times and outside the box. Nothing ventured, nothing gained is a guiding force for me. When I ask a client to be brave and try something, I always remind them, "if you don't love it, no worries, you don't pick it and it never existed."
We created a piece for Kayla that she thought was kind of crazy at the moment of creation. We had created plenty of pieces she knew she was going to love, so this was low stakes. She was game to experiment. Her favorite piece was created from this experimentation. Today that piece is a 24x36 piece of wall art in their home. This vision is what led Kayla and JDP senior Lucas's mom Jennifer to reach back out after all those years.
The studio has changed quite a bit over the now 16 years of existence. I am so honored when clients from long ago remember how we made them feel during portrait creation and cherish what we created together so much that they remember us over a decade later!
I could not have enjoyed the time creating with JDP senior Lucas more! Portraits are a launchpad for your stories to be told...Lucas's liscence plate Sada Fa is a tribute to his beloved Italian immigrant grandfather who passed away 2 years ago and was fond of saying, sada fa? (what to do?).
Lucas lives and breathes playing his guitar which has led to his being in 3 bands simultaneously. One of his bands, Nicholas Pare and the Jags is connected to popular 80's band Kix . Nicholas's dad is Robert Pare and he was in Kix.
Lucas was invited to join this band after Nicholas Pare heard Lucas play live. They are also writing original music together.
Lucas attends Walkersville and TJ Academy for the Fine Arts where he studies music theory. Music theory is like the study of grammar and math, so the reality doesn't exactly match what the idea of music school sounds like. Lucas admits while it's not exciting, and may only be making him a slightly better guitarist, he knows the cumulative effect on him as a musician is significant.
During his planning meeting, Lucas and Jennifer advised me this session was going to be focused on rock and roll and fast cars! Let's go! Mom's sports car was traded in prior to the session, but she brought her new super fast baby to the session for her baby boy to feature in his portraits!
Lucas impressed me over and over again during our time together. His mom and I had a lot to catch up on after not seeing each other for so many years. I created Unveil your Cinderella portraits for her as well for an anniversary gift. Lucas was not just patient, but gracious during our time of catch up and joined in throughout the conversation.
Lucas has 3 sisters. Some young men would be eternally frustrated by the chatter of groups of women but he's not an easily frustrated kid. Instead he's incredibly adaptable and jokes that he's had no choice but to figure out how to live with a house full of women. But here's the thing, he did have a choice and he chose to be a delight instead of a grump! Lucas you are a joy and I can't wait to see your name up in lights one day!!
