Several years ago Zach, from Texas flew in for a JDP senior experience. He loved cooking and when we shared his portraits, Mason's mom saw them and knew who she was coming to for senior portraits. Mason was years away, but she quietly waited her turn.
Mason's love of cooking started about 12 years ago, beside his grandmother in the kitchen. He joined her to prepare food and a chef was born. He loves the science end of cooking and the experimenting to create.
When Mason was just 13 he started volunteering at the Elks. This was his first exposure to commercial cooking. He would go on to earn a Congressional citation for accruing a massive 724 hours of volunteer service hours!
Next, Mason would train under Susan Rill who owns Dutch Korner. He also had a stint as a server at Bob Evans prior to his cooking training via Career Tech's Culinary Arts program. His teacher, Tim Norwood, is also a cook at the very popular local Floodzone. Tim saw the work ethic and incredible young man Mason is and brought him on to cook at Floodzone with him. I only spent a few hours with Mason, but enjoyed creating with him so much! He's going to be an excellent addition to any kitchen he graces!
Mason will leave soon to begin his chef training at Johnson and Wales Culinary in Rhode Island. Johnson & Wales is in the top 3 chef programs in the world! While it's not as close as he'd like, his mom rests in the knowledge that it's just a 45 minute flight away!
Speaking of his mom...this portrait below...oh where do I start. It's damn near impossible to put into words the progression that happens through the course of a session. So many come with nerves and reluctance. Watching a client relax and trust the process and show up for real--it's an honor. Live time viewing countless moments become priceless memories is something I will never take lightly.
Well, this moment below--I coached Mason to turn to look in the direction he's facing. When he did so, he saw his mom and just grinned ear to ear. I told Kristy, "always remember that moment when you see this. This is how your boy sees you."
Mason's time as SGA county president, his time in NHS, his lifetime playing baseball, his recent love for golf time with his dad...all these have prepared this young man to soar with the wings of an eagle! His calm demeanor and easy smile make him a delight for everyone he does life with! Here's to one day being the head chef as a Japanese sushi house Mason!
