Engagement Portraits Tad and Freya

A sneaky little thief; that's what time is.  One day you are stepping over the intricate  train tracks your little boy's designed, snaking through the whole first floor.  The next day you are planning his engagement portraits from half way across the country.  Welcome to Tad and Freya's engagement portraits.

I can't tell you the number of times, over the last 24 years, I've thought about what my future daughter in laws would be like.  I can tell you I've prayed for them mightily.  Their father and I knelt by our bed on our wedding night, 33 years ago, to pray over our future children and those they'd link arms with through life.  That seems like a blink ago.

Freya and Tad met at Virginia Tech and a fast friendship was born, grounded in the ease with which they made each other laugh.  Their fast friendship progressed into the love affair that brings us here today.

Upon graduation, Tad and Freya got jobs that have required them to be apart for about a year.  They are growing weary of the VA/TX long distance love.  It has made them all the more eager for their wedding fast approaching this fall!

Their actual engagement was the stuff Hallmark movies are made of.  Tad asked Freya to be his bride amidst a lightly falling snow on a hiking trail in the mountains that surround Virginia Tech.  While they hiked, Freya discovered notes hanging from tree limbs all along the path. Tad had recorded their most important shared memories over the last 4 years and hung them from trees for her to discover.

As a momma, I've sat back and watched this love story unfold over the last 4 years with a growing sense of joy.  I've watched these two celebrate, mourn, rebuild, discover, laugh, cry, vision cast, dream, challenge, restore, encourage, explore, envelop, and cheer each other on in a way that gives me confidence in the vows they are preparing to make.

I've watched them sit at the beach for 8 hours, no phones, just being together and talking about their lives.  They make space for one another to dream big while building grounding foundations that will stand the storms of life.  All the while, so much laughter.

When my boys were little, I had a running mental list I called, "Apology letter to my future daughter in laws."  It encompassed some of the ways I know my boys could potentially drive their future wives crazy.  Here are a few of those items I'd include:

#1.  I'm sorry, in advance, for your ruined clothing that will be the result of my son throwing all the colors and whites together in one load.  (I gave up sorting when the twins came home and I had 3 babies in diapers.  I never looked back and just stopped buying white clothes.  Instead, since the washer was in perpetual motion, I often prayed for these future wives to grow strong in body, mind, spirit and soul.  I prayed they would find their strength rooted in the love and grace of our Jesus whose love knows no limits.)

#2.  I'm sorry my son will liekly present you gifts that look like a 5 year old wrapped them.  (We spent so much time exploring the depths of what makes us who we are on the inside, that we never gave much attention to the wrappers in life.  Instead, we'd spend hours creating the perfect gift that would be a demonstration of the great love that burns inside us.  That attention to detail just never made it to the outer packaging.)

#3.  I'm sorry if my son ever tosses a frozen bag of broccoli to you from across the grocery aisle, or tosses a sponge across the kitchen, or makes up ridiculous clean up songs.  (This was my attempt to infuse a bit of joy into the tedium of chores.)

#4.  I'm sorry that the background noise in your home when you have children will likely be basketballs being dribbled all over your hardwood floors.  (we picked activity over screens when it was within our parenting power.  It made some pretty great ball handlers in the process and a lot of fun memories.)

#5.  I'm sorry my son will likely make your kitchen a disaster with trying new recipes and cooking up the feasts they are all equipped to do.  (We spent more time in the kitchen together than any other place.  It's where we laughed, argued, cried, debated, danced, and made our best memories with our people as we did life together.).

So Tad and Freya, I close by praying the blessings of the Lord over you.  May you know Him deeply, as you navigate this complicated thing we call life.  May you cast your eyes to heaven, knowing this is where all our hope comes from!  May the Lord bless you and keep you and cause His face to smile upon you!

Love, Momma
