JDP senior ballerina Wren has been anticipating her portrait time ever since her big brother Joey, who is also a phenomenal dancer, was here several years ago. The Schuman family lives and breathes artistry, making this world a more enchanting place to be.
Wren has a spunky personality that looks for the magic everywhere she goes in life. She seems to have inherited this from her mother. I'm telling you, the love of arts runs deeply in this family! They have all performed together in theatrical productions as well. Wren's dad was a professional opera singer, traveling the world to perform for 10 years. But alas, supporting a family on that income was not realistic which led him to become a lawyer.
Wren is the president of the International Thespians club at her high school. She's no stranger to the stage from all her dancing over the years, so she decided to check out stage crew when she joined Drama club. She enjoyed it, but it wasn't long before the pull of performing led her back on stage with the warm of spotlights hitting her as she delivered performances.
Wren's been in Peter and the Star Catcher, Hair Spray, Footloose and her absolute favorite role as the baker's wife in Into the Woods. Being very committed to her dance practices and theatrical productions at her high school creates an incredibly demanding schedule for Wren. Highschool rehersals are typically end of school day to 4:30, then she races out to 5:00 dance classes 2-3x a week and Saturdays during show season.
Wren has been dancing in The Nutcracker since she was just 6 years old. Currently she's hot and heavy in the crazy season that is Nutcracker and performing alongside her dad. Her current training as a dancer is with Mid Atlantic Youth Ballet where she splits her training equally between ballet and contemporary.
Wren is also a big fan of music--all kinds! She has a beloved vinyl collection that allows her to appreciate the artistry in the cover work and the tactile experience complimented by sound quality that restores what's missing from digital. She's also been learning to play guitar and drums for the last several years. Drums have a special place in her heart because they allow for constant motion which resonates with this dancer who has always felt the music.
Wren is drawn to the beauty of the fluidity of ballet. She simply cannot imagine her life without ballet in it. Her ballet journey began when she was just 3 years old so imagining a life without ballet just seems empty.
Movement comes easily to Wren, which doesn't mean she doesn't have to work her tail off to achieve the skill she displays in dance. But it does mean she feels most like herself and most free when she's dancing. She enters worlds and becomes Alice of Alice and Wonderland, or the wicked witch or Peter Pan...the prospect of future roles she'll fill intrigues her.
Wren believes her training in tap has helped her develop her skills as a drummer. While she loves drums with her whole heart, she's also a Broadway baby. If she hears a musical she loves, one time and she's got the lyrics down to the soundtrack and is singing along.
Wren's plans after graduation are to pursue an elementry education major. She currently teaches 6 & 7 year olds ballet and loves it. She also works with children at Coppermine's summer camps.
Wren's also helped to train search and rescue dogs as a community service project. The world is her oyster and she's ready to explore, create, and blaze a trail through this life in all the ways that capture her imagination.
