Senior Portraits Artistic Hollis

I've got a new nickname for JDP senior Hollis, it's The Fixer.  The reveal why comes later.

Hollis is deeply entrenched in their school's drama program in just about every facet you can imagine.  You are just as likely to see Hollis performing on stage as you are being a runner.  A runner is an over all helper/fixer for all things on set.  Hollis is skilled at dealing with mic issues (which always abound on set), climbing the catwalk (which terrifies most people) and set design.

Hollis's love of being involved in school and community theater spills over into a deep appreciation for attending shows as well.  Hadestown is their current favorite show they've seen in Baltimore.  Hollis is also mildly obsessed with the whole Percy Jackson series and dream of being able to play Nico in a production some day.

Hollis is in a family of creatives.  Their love of Percy Jackson and collecting the books inspired Hollis's dad to seek them out on his travels with his National Guard deployments.  Hollis's dad is a former Marine who has helped to inspire Hollis's love of music and a 'figure it out' mentality to bring visions to life.  Hollis's mom has a deep love of creating beauty in her home space via her spectacular gardens.

Hollis brought all her beloved Percy Jackson books, along with a very special set of them her dad hand tooled custom covers for as a surprise gift.  It didn't matter to Hollis that this was a heavy load to pack up, carry in, pack back up, carry in and reload onto the shelves.  When Hollis sets their mind to something, they are going after it!  Hollis does not want to be praised for their patience, they wants to embrace each step along the way with the wonder of a child.

Hollis is a gifted poet who plunges the depths of this frail condition we call humanity.  They shared their poem, "Childlike Wonder" with me during the planning consultation and it stopped me in my tracks.  The rawness of Hollis's words compels the listener to wade in and plumb the depths along side them.  Hollis's mom and dad have attended poetry slams where Hollis shared their work and walked away dumbfounded.

Hollis is a creator and it's clear they pour their heart and soul into the works of their hands.  Hollis created a 93 page book of poetry for their boyfriend of almost 2 years Oliver.  Hollis creates poetry, costumes, music, art...you name it, Hollis has probably dabbled in it.  And this is how we discover who we are and what our contributions to the world are meant to be.

Hollis's mom was overwhelmed by the weight of all we were doing during the creating day and shed a few tears, equal parts gratitude and joy.  That's a beautiful thing to behold.

Hollis brought Emily's high school Homecoming dress for a segment with their dad's beloved Firebird. Hollis also brought a collection of their favorite family music, in many forms, including a compilation CD burned of worship music from when Tim and Emily were in a young married couples group my husband and I led over 20 years ago.  Hollis brought their great grand-mom's sewing machine.  Connectedness through the generations in portrait--ahh, what a lovely sweet spot! This connectedness is a lifeline from which Hollis receives so much of their inspiration and resolve as a creator.

So why do I call this beautiful soul The Fixer?  When Hollis came to pick favorite portraits, I offered to make them a latte.  Well, I was a little distracted while chatting with Hollis and Emily and could't figure out what was wrong with the machine-it was spitting crazy but not producing the steam.  Hollis stepped in to unclog ports and then realized it was just that the reservoir was out of water.  Problem solved!  A studio dress zipper got stuck and we had to seam rip the seam to allow an opening for the session that day.  Hollis learned of this and offered to repair the dress for me and any others that needed mending.  The Fixer!
